Refuge

The World

The Earth on which the story of Refuge takes place is identical to ours, as far as the average citizen is aware. The same politics, the same countries, the same cities, the same stores. Unlike our world, however, a growing minority of people, the Gifted, possess supernatural abilities and powers that set them apart. Still fewer people have begun to harness the Arcane arts with some success. In secret government and private sectors the world over, scientists who are aware of the existence of the Gifted develop technologies intended to harness the abilities of the gifted for political goals, technologies far superior to those utilized on our Earth.

The Story

Arc 1

Alex was an ordinary sixteen year old girl until, one day, she found everything in her life changed. She woke up to discover she is in a pristine white cell, alone. She was kept there for an indeterminate amount of time until finally being allowed to see her captor, a shadowy man with powerful telepathic abilities going only by the pseudonym Hades. She was introduced to five other captives, Nick, Byron, Stone, and Geoff, and they were given numeric designations. While the grander purpose of their captivity was kept a secret, Hades did inform them that they were, in fact, five of the Gifted, and he intended to train them. Months passed, their training continued, each of them discovering their abilities and limitations under his cruel eyes, until, finally, an opportunity for escape presented itself. Geoff, however, was lost in the attempt, believed dead. The escapees fled to New York, where, they believed, the sheer quantity of people will keep them safe from Hades’ detection. Escape, however, was not enough. Refusing to live in fear, the four survivors , using Nick’s abilities to detect others of their kind, formed an underground network of Gifted. Many of the members, including the original four, live together in a condemned district, using the abilities of Alex and other members to obtain money, food, and other supplies. Members who are able to continue living normal lives do so, but always at the risk of being discovered. They call their organization Refuge, and its members refer to themselves as Refugees.
